Field Update - Masvingo, Zimbabwe

August 26, 2016

Friday, August 26, 2016

When the Masvingo clinic closed for the day yesterday, people stayed in line. An hour or so later we found about 300 people there who were committed to staying the night so they could be treated today.

It was a cold night with temperatures in the 40s F. This morning’s 4:30 a.m. visit to the line revealed people huddled together under blankets and approximately 1,000 waiting for the opportunity to receive medical care today.

Ahead of the team this morning were the final hours of the clinic and they focused on treating as many as they could. The line management team uses discernment in allowing the most urgent cases to move forward in the line to ensure treatment today. While it’s obvious that we couldn’t do these medical outreaches without our physicians and medical professionals, we also couldn’t do them without our line management team. The need is enormous, and from physicians to line keepers to administrative helpers, each team member has their own particular glimpse of it. The medical teams sees the vast need in detail, one patient at a time. The line management team, while they see individuals as well and enjoy talking with people in line, they see the tremendous need in mass. They live and work among the throngs of people all day. Perhaps they feel the heartbreak most deeply of any team members when we have to turn people away because the clinic must close for the final time.

The lines are empty now but for a few folks resting. The Masvingo 2016 medical clinic has come to an end. The team spent the day packing up and tearing down the clinic. In the photo below you can see the campsite in the background.

Rest and refreshment is on its way for the team, along with assessing all they’ve experienced in the last wonderful, service-filled week.
